Northeast United Methodist Church
Northeast UMC is a merger of the former Trinity and Grace United Methodist Churches in northeast Minneapolis. The church has been selected to be the Metro West Builder’s spring call.
The new congregation is passionate about caring for the Earth and addressing food insecurity in their community. The idea of a community garden emerged as a way to accomplish several goals: an inviting church yard, stewardship of their land, and support of the church’s community meals and local food shelves. In their outreach to the commmunity, their hope is to inspire community hope and recreate a doorway to God and Jesus.
The seeds of their vision have been planted and already borne fruit. In 2012, in addition to providing fresh produce for their free community meals, the garden produced over 300 pounds of food which was donated to local food shelves.
With your help, they hope to continue the dream by adding more raised beds and making the gardens more accessible for physically challenged volunteers by raising a retaining wall that will allow them to sit on the wall to weed and pick produce or to wheel a chair alongside to access the bed. Future plans include solar power lighting, and the addition of pathways, benches and aesthetically inspiring garden trellis and scultures.
