Simpson United Methodist Church

Simpson-Outside-w300x200

Simpson United Methodist Church has been selected for the 2013 Fall Call.  Simpson has a long history of ministry and service to it’s neighborhood.  Founded in 1882, the congregation expanded rapidly as the population of Minneapolis grew.  In the 1950s the inner city housing boom came to an end, and poverty began to increase in the Simpson area.  The church re-focused it’s attention and energy into social outreach ministries.

Currently, the building houses a men’s shelter, a women’s shelter, a food shelf, the Simpson Center for Servant Ministries, and a worshipping congregation at the beating heart of it all.  Hundreds of families are served by the food shelf.  66 men and women are sheltered every night in the building.  And 1500 volunteers, many from United Methodist churches serve those in need.

And now the congregation is in need.  The walls, they are a crumblin’.  Cracks in the stucco are causing damage to inner walls and ceilings.  They proclaim “Our walls are cracked, not our mission!”  The total cost for repair of the stucco exterior of the facility comes to $22,000.  An anonymous donor has stepped forward to match your gift, dollar for dollar, up to $10,000.

Be a partner in their ministry.  Your gift will make the difference! You can send your donation, marked “2013 Fall Call” to Metro West Builders, 122 W. Franklin Ave. Minneapolis,  MN  55404.

Northeast United Methodist ChurchNEUMC-300x168-w

Northeast UMC is a merger of the former Trinity and Grace United Methodist Churches in northeast Minneapolis. The church has been selected to be the Metro West Builder’s spring call.

The new congregation is passionate about caring for the Earth and addressing food insecurity in their community. The idea of a community garden emerged as a way to accomplish several goals:  an inviting church yard, stewardship of their land, and support of the church’s community meals and local food shelves.  In their outreach to the commmunity, their hope is to inspire community hope and recreate a doorway to God and Jesus.

The seeds of their vision have been planted and already borne fruit.  In 2012, in addition to providing fresh produce for their free community meals, the garden produced over 300 pounds of food which was donated to local food shelves.

With your help, they hope to continue the dream by adding more raised beds and making the gardens more accessible for physically challenged volunteers by raising a retaining wall that will allow them to sit on the wall to weed and pick produce or to wheel a chair alongside to access the bed.  Future plans include solar power lighting, and the addition of pathways, benches and aesthetically inspiring garden trellis and scultures.

To donate, send your check, marked ‘Spring Call 2013’ to:

 Walker United Methodist ChurchWalker_300x168-w

On May 27, 2012, Pentecost Sunday the Walker United Methodist Church was struck by lightning and burned to the ground.   The congregation has made a decision to rebuild on the same site in the Powderhorn neighborhood, where they have a vital urban ministry.   The new building will have lots of meeting space for Nonprofits.  The new fellowship hall will be on the second floor, with a view of the Minneapolis skyline.  An adjacent commercial kitchen will be available to both Walker and outside groups.  The sanctuary, Sunday School, offices, a small meeting room and a meditation room will be on the first floor.

Unfortunately, Walker’s insurance will not cover the cost of a full rebuild, but with the funds from the Metro West Builder Fall Call, their dream is becoming a reality.  The call raised over $26,000.  There was a anonymous donor who matched those gifts 10 to 1, resulting in over $260,000 for the project.  Walker will be breaking ground on their new facility in the spring.  Thank you, Builder’s Club members, for helping to make this dream a reality!
